A SoundCloud Legend?
Spooky Black now known as Corbin. Is considered a SoundCloud legend. Now, if you don’t remember what SoundCloud was. It was a free music streaming platform with a twist, anyone with a recording could post onto SoundCloud in a instant and it could potentially chart with radio hits. At the time, everyone I knew was using SoundCloud. Kind of strange, the days before Spotify or Apple Music. SoundCloud provided opportunities for artist to create and share their music globally at an instant. I was in Highschool when I first heard Spooky Black on SoundCloud for the first time. I think I saw my crush make a tweet about his music one time. And. I. Was. HOOKED. I remember lying down on my back with my blue Beats headphones on. Staring at the ceiling listening to Spook and his “pain”. His voice was one of THE most captivating things I’ve ever heard, especially in his most well known song WITHOUT YOU produced by greaf. But don’t get me wrong. I had his whole Mixtape Black Silk in my CD collection. I ended up giving it too a friend and he seemed more hooked than I was. There were many long nights smoking, Spooky Black in the background and just having great nostalgic memories. I think that’s what makes him a legend. Is that many people have stories just like this, reminds us of the good times.
Of course I’ve listened to Spooks earlier work such as “Forest”. A early Mixtape that he created seemingly for the memes. But quickly matured. LEAVING is a project that will always be a staple for me. The atmosphere of the record is still something that I’ve yet to hear in any other hip hop production. His voice and the melodies he creates are so authentic and unable to be replicated. The instrumental selection is this spacey high in the clouds type of feel sticking true to his sound. The album also includes a few features including another legend (in my opinion) Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, of course the singer and guitar player for the early Tigers Jaw band. The record has cemented in my mind for years and is one that I continue to come back to every now and then after all these years.
I’m not going to lie to you guys and tell you that I’ve listened to a ton of Corbin. His switch from Spooky Black to Corbin was quite a change. MOURN was a record that kind of flew over my head. It’s not that i didn’t like it. It just felt like he was changing. But looking back on it, he was just maturing his sound again. GHOST WITH SKIN was a album that I had on repeat on a while back. It’s more of a stripped back production kind of album compared to his others, but still Corbin and his emotional self.
Thank you Spook for the memories and thank you for reading. Shout out to this legend! MAKE SURE TO GO LISTEN TO CORBIN SPOOKY BLACK MUSIC RIGHT NOW!
