Music Recommendation: Title Fight

Title Fight & Their Lasting Legacy

Title Fight Live 2014

Aww. Good ol Title Fight. A phenomenal band from Kingston, Pennsylvania that started in 2003 and hasn’t been active since 2018, despite their current virality. I think the last time I saw they had 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify, impressive considering were in a time that rock type music is considered dead. They definitely are one of the most important punk bands to have emerged from the underground scene. I can’t say that I’ve seen them perform live and I don’t know why I never did. But they’ve been a band on my top favorites since Highshool. There was a girl that went to our school that was really into Tumblr at the time, and I remember seeing a post she made about a Mixtape she made for a friend at the time. With bands like Seahaven, Citizen, and Title Fight. I’ve come to known that these bands were really popular on Tumblr because of the aesthetic edits people would make of their lyrics and the underground culture that these bands were creating. The Story So Far comes to mind here but that’s for another post. Title Fight pioneers what modern punk has managed to achieve. I mean, hell they were at it since I think middle school or at least Highshcool. And I understand I guess the decision of ending it. Not every band can have a Green Day type career. I guess you can only do so many smelly sweaty shows before you get sick of it.

Title Fight – The Last Thing You Forget

This is my favorite project by Title Fight. The Last Thing You Forget blessed the world in 2009. Barely before I could actually get on the internet. It wasn’t until the 9th or 10th grade when they became something in my life. It’s funny because I don’t exactly remember when I got into them but I remember the time. It was around when my parents were getting into a divorce. I started getting into all these emotional bands like Citizen and Title Fight. The Last Thing You Forget is a record that always sticks in the back of my mind. It’s one of those punk masterpieces by a bunch of young dudes just yelling and slamming their instruments melodically. The type of music you can cruise around too but still play loudly, man it’s just a good time.

Title Fights most popular song

(Head In The Ceiling Fan) First off I want to say that this is far from my favorite song by Title Fight, but it is still a one of a kind anthem. Off of their FLORAL GREEN record, Head In The Ceiling Fan is one of their more calmer songs. The song starts off with some of the most emotional tones out of a guitar that I’ve ever heard. It’s like a sad story playing in my head with musical notes and then all of a sudden, BOOM, Title Fight is in full action. With Jamie delivering softly a few lyrics. Title Fight had two singers. But they were a band where it didn’t matter who was singing because they both brought equal UMPH to the band. Dual headed dragon I’ve heard someone say. The song winds back down with Jamie closing out the song with his iconic emo whalish melody and grungy guitar tone. The song really takes you on a trip from start to finish.

Title Fights last album

As a fan of this band. At time time, I was not a huge fan of this album, Hyperview. It felt like they drastically changed their sound. But listening to it with mature ears. I hear a different side of Title Fight they’ve possibly have always wanted to express. A more laid back sound. A more melodic sound. Soft fuzzy guitars instead of blown out distortion. A more melodic approach with the vocals, but still at times have that original Title Fight feel. I can say as someone who has followed this band I can appreciate the approach of this album BUT it does seem like a strange note to leave off on. I wonder if they thought Hyperview was going to be their very last album and to leave it at that. Or it might of been more dramatic than that. Only the band members will truly know the future of Title Fight. Maybe the underground will get its own Oasis reunion type tour if they ever decide to make music again.
